The City of Winter Park Building
Division adopted its first code on April 8, 1926, for electrical
wiring safety in building construction. Since then, the division
has adopted new codes as they become available as required by law.
Currently, we utilize the latest edition of the Florida Building,
Plumbing, Mechanical, and Gas Codes, The Florida Energy Efficiency
Code, The Florida Accessibility Code (ADA), and the National Electric
Code. Just as the number and complexity of codes has changed over
the years, so have the functions of the Building Division. The Building
Division is responsible for the issuance of building permits, demolition
permits, building inspections, Land Development Code zoning review,
occupational license issuance, garage and estate sale permits, and
processing applications for variances through the Board of Adjustment.
All plans are routed through the Building Division for coordination
with engineering, utilities, storm water, fire, parks, police, CRA
and planning. The division is always available to answer questions
and work with citizens, contractors, architects and engineers on
a daily basis.
Our primary Mission is to provide for the public
safety, health, and general welfare in the built environment through
education and enforcement of the building codes, local ordinances,
and state laws. Life safety is our main goal and objective.
This goal is accomplished by a dedicated staff
of state and nationally certified building officials, plans examiners,
building inspectors, and support personnel. The only national rating
service of building departments, ISO, has classified Winter Park’s
department as a number 2 out of 10. There are only two number 1’s
in the United States. This is a testimony to the quality of services
provided to the citizens and contractors in Winter Park. The staff
actively participates in national, state, and local organizations,
such as the Building Officials Association of Florida, the Florida
Building Commission, and the International Code Council that support
the maintenance and development of building codes.
